Link Nurses

The concept of link nurses is a growing phenomenon and a recognised essential component in nursing practice.  A link nurse is defined as “a nurse that is, or is moving towards being, an expert and resource person for an identified topic of specialty practice, in which they have an interest and passion”.

Gerontological nursing can be complex and there is a need for link nurses to maintain a current up-to-date knowledge, experience and practice, based on the best available evidence.  To this end St Mary’s operates a link nurse system in the following key areas of nursing care:-

  • Continence care

  • Diabetes care

  • End of life care

  • Falls prevention and management

  • Infection control

  • Medication management

  • Tissue viability

Through liaison with a specialist nurse and regular scheduled meetings, the link nurse aims to increase awareness among the staff on their unit of new developments that will improve practice.
